Ecowende

Our wind farm

Greening the demand for electricity

Ecowende is a joint venture of Shell, Eneco and Chubu. The Ecowende wind farm (Hollandse Kust (west) lot VI) will be located about 53 kilometres off the Dutch coast, near Ijmuiden. With an installed capacity of approximately 760 MW, we can make about 3% of the current Dutch electricity demand greener. We are aiming to have the wind farm fully operational and commissioned in 2026.

Our ambition

A sustainable future for offshore wind that positively contributes to the North Sea’s ecology. An ambition that we hope to bring to life through collaboration with our partners, research and progressive innovations. We are teaming up with nature to develop, build and operate the Ecowende wind farm and lead the way for affordable, sustainable and responsible offshore energy.

A flourishing ecosystem

We are realising one of the largest offshore field labs in the world. For Ecowende and other future wind farms, we envision a flourishing ecosystem, with minimal impact on birds, bats and the underwater world. This is the guiding principle in the design and construction of our wind farm.

Not only does our pilot project of ecological innovations have a positive ecological impact, but it also generates knowledge, and increases understanding and support for offshore wind energy in the Netherlands and beyond.

To really make an impact, we will ensure that the knowledge we gain, from our monitoring and research programmes regarding the various species and the effect of our ecological measures, is widely accessible. From scientists, policymakers, nature organisations and the wider public to other wind farm developers in the offshore sector.

Collaborating on a new ecological benchmark

We want to create a new ecological benchmark for the development and construction of wind farms at the North Sea and make it possible to build offshore wind farms in the future that have a “net positive impact” on nature. This is important because there are big ambitions for offshore wind. An acceleration is needed in a way that contributes to nature above and below water.

And we are not doing this alone. We are excited to be working with exceptional partners who share our vision for innovation and sustainable development. Together, we are realising our ambition of becoming the first wind farm in harmony with nature through collaboration on cutting edge innovations and various monitoring and research programmes.
