24SEA

24SEA provides data-driven insights in the structural integrity of Ecowende’s wind turbine support structures. Therefore 24SEA developed an integral so-called ‘Structural Health Monitoring’ (SHM) solution to serve the offshore wind industry. This solution covers design, assembly, installation and the Operation and Maintenance (O&M) services.

24SEA does not only have strong industrial track record, but being a spin-off from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel the innovative mindset remains part of 24SEA’s DNA. This long-term academic cooperation resulted in 24SEA’s today’s unique expertise to perform data-analysis on the dynamics and loads of our wind turbines' support structures (tower and foundation). This is done based on a smart combination of a subset of six wind turbines with a complete monitoring system, a reduced monitoring system installed on every wind turbine and state-of-the-art data-analysis expertise.

With our instrumentation and expertise we support Ecowende with the lifetime assessment of all wind turbines. Studying the wind turbines' support structures may be an important step towards the application of positive ecological measures in future offshore wind farms.

Data-driven lifetime insights

A subset of Ecowende’s wind turbines will be instrumented with a complete SHM system, which will allow to directly derive the load and dynamic behaviour of the support structure to the environmental conditions and the wind turbine’s actions. A project specific SHM system will be designed, installed and commissioned.

During the O&M phase 24SEA aims to provide decision support to Ecowende’s O&M team by means of their data-analysis expertise. The data-driven insights are crucial to quantify the impact on the structural lifetime of the support structure for the environmental and operational conditions to which the turbines will be exposed.

Curtailment of the turbines is an example of such operational condition for which the structural response needs to be monitored. This to provide a feedback loop to flag potential structural impacts and align on mitigating actions.

Machine-learning models

By means of the instrumentation of every wind turbine’s nacelle with a reduced SHM system, lifetime assessments can be extrapolated to the entire wind farm. 24SEA’s data-analysis capabilities allows to derive the loads acting on every wind turbine’s support structure by means of machine learning models.
