Blijdorp Zoo

Blijdorp Zoo, founded in 1857. Since then, an icon in both Rotterdam and the Netherlands. In 2023, the zoo unveiled an ambitious plan. With its Masterplan 2050, Blijdorp Zoo is taking a unique step — a fresh breeze in the zoo world. A transition from a ‘traditional’ zoo to an organization dedicated to global nature restoration and species conservation. A mission that aligns perfectly with Ecowende’s goals.

With Ecowende, we have a partner who understands that things need to change. Their large-scale ecological research shows they take nature seriously. Together, we create a positive impact on biodiversity in the North Sea.

Living with wind parks

Blijdorp Zoo has opened an impressive new exhibit in the Oceanium: Living with Wind Parks. This interactive experience takes visitors into the world of wind energy and the biodiversity of the North Sea — from colourful fish to towering wind turbines.

Visitors can explore how sustainable energy and marine life can support one another. The exhibit was opened in July 2025 by Blijdorp’s Kids Panel alongside the leadership of both Blijdorp and Ecowende.
