Webinar coloured blades and bird flight behaviour
We are teaming up with Vestas to install red blades in our offshore wind farm to improve the visibility of the wind turbines for birds and reduce collision risks. One red-coated blade is being installed on each of seven turbines as part of an innovative study. The objective of the single blade in a different colour is to create a smear, which is thought to be better visible for birds. A lot is still unknown on this effect, including which colours and patterns work best.
Vestas supports the initiative by delivering the red blades for the trial, Waardenburg Ecology, DHI and Robin Radar Systems will conduct the field research. The goal is to assess the effectiveness of red blades as part of our broader ecological approach that includes adaptive curtailment and a bird corridor—all aiming to make offshore wind nature-inclusive.
