For fish and benthic habitats
The seabed of the HKW area is one of the most extensive sand wave areas in the world and has a unique character. Fish and other organisms that live on, in and near the bottom of the sea – also benthic communities or benthos – make up the basis of the food web for many other (protected) species. The health of fish and benthos is thus crucial for the entire ecosystem.
In general, the wind farm will have very few negative effects on fish and the benthic communities. However, we do see opportunities to improve their habitat and will focus on enabling and stimulating a positive effect.
In determining our approach for these species, we have considered the various structures and safe, sheltered places that they prefer for finding shelter, accommodation or for laying eggs. As such, we can encourage benthos on hard substrate with the construction of the wind farm. We also look out for benthos in sand wave habitat by stimulating this habitat specifically.
