For harbour porpoises
We know that the harbour porpoise is the most sensitive marine mammal in the HKW area. If we disturb the harbour porpoise as little as possible, other species will also be able to benefit from this.
The harbour porpoise is sensitive to sound disturbance, which can even lead to behavioural changes. The main cause of sound disturbance by the HKW project would be the installation of the foundations. We will also investigate the potential impact of noise from the shipping industry. Sound disturbance could trigger harbour porpoises to avoid the HKW area, which reduces their habitat – temporarily or permanently. As such we focus on technical measures that will hopefully contribute to reducing noise during the construction phase.
Since we already know that harbour porpoises are sensitive to noise, we want to try to ensure we make as little noise as possible in the first place. This allows us to reduce sound disturbance in its entirety.
